Welcome to Green Mountain Fibers & Yarn

Thank you helmet liner knitters, one and all!

During World War II “Knit Your Bit” appeared on a famous poster showing a pair of socks in progress including the line, “Our boys need socks!”

Today our military men and women need helmet liners. Uncle Sam provides only silk liners, and an industrious local group has been knitting helmet liners in washable wool to keep our soldiers warm. When a wool helmet liner has been provided to someone we usually hear back that everyone in their group would like one.

Our effort began with a goal to supply the troops deploying from Rutland with 150 helmet liners. On December 6th at a Christmas party for the soldiers and their families, we were able to deliver approximately 650 helmet liners to be distributed around the state. Our sincere thanks to the many knitters who helped us not only reach but surpass even our wildest dreams. Helmet liners came to us from all across Vermont and New England as knitters united in this common cause. Requests continue to come in from "military moms" or other branches of the service so we continue to knit.

We are also told that the soldiers deployed to Afghanistan like to distribute hats to the Afghan children who have very little to keep them warm during bitter winters. If you would like to donate hats to this cause, we welcome them and will make sure they are sent to the appropriate place for distribution.

Again, thank you one and all for your unbelievable efforts!
